Research

My main areas of interest are the determinants and patterns of variation in long-run mortality and fertility change in Europe with special focus on Great Britain and Estonia. My work draws on the increasing availability of historical 'big data' to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the fertility and mortality transitions of the 19th and early 20th century. This also involves trying to incorporate spatial analysis into the study of historical demographic change to understand diffusion mechanisms linked to the spread and variation of demographic behaviours.
