The codebook of Anglican registration units

The codebook of Anglican registration units

This resource was created by Dr Peter Kitson with assistance from Stephen Thompson and a number of research assistants as part of the project.

As a precondition for collecting all the occupational information from parish registers between 1813 and 1820, it was necessary to compile a complete list of all the parishes and chapelries which maintained their own baptism registers at this time. This codebook of 'registration units' that resulted is a valuable research aid in its own right. It incorporates a list of every Anglican parish and chapelry in England and Wales that kept a register of baptisms between 1538 and 1820, and assigns to each a unique ID. It is likely that the unique IDs will come to be widely used by other researchers creating parish level data and, since the IDs are linked to the GIS, anyone so doing will find it very easy to map their data. Please note that the spatial matching relates only to the parochial geography as it stood in 1813. Dr John Broad (Cambridge) is using the registration unit codebook to provide unique identities for 1,270 parishes in the diocese of Lincoln for his edition of the Wake ecclesiastical visitation returns c.1710 to be published by the British Academy

The codebook comes with adequate documentation for those with the requisite technical knowledge. Please note that the codebook lacks information on marriage and burial registration coverage. Sadly we do not have the resources to provide further assistance.
