Population growth in England 1761-1851

Population growth in England 1761-1851

The units shown on the maps are hundreds and towns. Until the major changes in administrative units in the mid-nineteenth century, hundreds and towns were administrative units immediately below the county level. There were 610 of these units in the maps. They varied greatly in size. Some urban units, such as London City Within and London City Without are not separately distinguishable because of their very small area when shown on a conventional map. Some hundreds covered large areas, especially in the north of England.

There are three maps. They display population growth expressed as a rate per 1,000 per annum. The data are taken from table A2.7 in Wrigley, The early English censuses. The rates are grouped in seven classes ranging from a rate indicating population decline (<0.0) to a rate in excess of 20.0 per 1,000. The three maps cover the periods 1760-1801, 1801-1851, and 1761-1851.
