Railways

The Occupations Project has yet to tap the full potential of railway GIS data. As well as conventional mapping and GIS analyses we have begun to experiment with animation. Click on the link below to see a trial animation of the growth and contraction of railways of Britain 1811-1981. The labels of the animation are the same dates as the decadal census. Thus animation would not have been possible without the kind permission of Colonel Michael Cobb to digitise his The Railways of Great Britain. A Historical Atlas (Shepperton. edn 2005) and major digitising input from the team led by Prof. Jordi Martí-Henneberg of the Department of Geography and Sociology, University of Lleida. In due course we would like to release a series of animations with accompanying population and occupational data. Similar output is planned for the navigable waterways GIS and yet to be completed turnpike roads GIS. Such digital output has huge potential for school and undergraduate teaching.
