Transport, urbanization and economic development in England and Wales c.1670-1911

Ports and coastal network, 1600-1911

The ports data include all places that were a port at some point between c. 1600 to c. 1911. The sources include among others the listing of customs ports by Matthew Hale (d.1676), James Daniel's Directory of ports (1843), and John Langton and R.J. Morris', Atlas of Industrializing Britain with more sources shortly to be added for c. 1911. The database also includes an approximation of the common routes taken by coastal vessels. Thus the approximate distance between ports can be calculated.

The ports data also includes the registered shipping tonnage at each port and the coastal and foreign tonnage into and out of ports. At present the data is drawn from the Atlas of Industrializing Britain for 1791, 1841 and 1900 but we plan to add those for 1831 and 1911.The map below shows the names and locations of the customs ports of England and Wales and the tonnage of registered shipping at each port.
